December 19, 2003 - The Town of Cary has withdrawn its plan to voluntary annex Area 20 and Area 21 in southern Wake county. Please see below the press release from town management.
CARY RESCINDS CURRENT INVOLUNTARY ANNEXATION PLANS
CARY, NC - In a special meeting this afternoon, the Cary Town Council voted
to rescind plans to involuntarily annex 1,874 parcels of land south of its
current Town limits and, instead, adopt a joint utilities service boundary
agreement with the Town of Holly Springs. The 20-year agreement ensures
that each municipality will only annex property on its side of the boundary
line, thus protecting Cary's $64 million investment in parks, roads, water,
and sewer made in its service area over the last 15 years.
"This agreement helps ensure that taxpayer resources are used most
efficiently and that the state's policies on growth and urbanization are
supported," said Town Manager Bill Coleman. Cary already had utility
service boundary agreements with Apex, Durham, and Raleigh.
Property owners affected by today's decision will get a letter from the Town
of Cary notifying them that the current plans for annexation have been
dropped and that a utilities service boundary agreement has been reached.
On November 24, 2003, the Cary Town Council adopted a Resolution of Intent
to involuntarily annex land south of its current Town limits in order to
create a permanent boundary between Cary and Holly Springs. That action
came following a vote by Holly Springs to table action on the agreement.
